Four From Blue Fencing Named NFC All-Stars; Calventus-Coveney Top Epee Fencer

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Four members of the Wellesley College fencing team have earned Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) All-Star honors for the 2018-19 season. Sophomores Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) and Lauren Park (Wayne, N.J.) each earned First Team selections, while junior Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) and first year Yasemin Ersen (Newton, Mass.) were named to the Second Team in their respective weapons.

In addition to being a First Team All-Star, Calventus-Coveney finished the year as the top epee fencer in the conference, winning 28 of 30 bouts in NFC competition. Calventus-Coveney and Maurer each earned All-Star honors for the second consecutive season and the four NFC All-Star honors is the most for the program since Wellesley also had four selection during the 2006-07 season. This season, the Blue set a program record with 23 victories through all team competitions while finishing tied for third in the NFC with nine victories in conference competition.

Calventus-Coveney was a remarkable 60-9 during the entire 2018-19 season, posting her second consecutive 60+ win season. The Blue's top epee fencer was also the top epee competitor in the NFC, recording an incredible 93.33% win rate in 30 bouts with a nearly untouchable 28-2 overall record. Her 28-2 record during NFC competition included a perfect 15-0 day to lead the Blue to a 4-2 record at the first NFC Conference Meet on November 17 at MIT.
 
Lauren Park | So. | Wayne, N.J. | First Team Sabre
 
Park finished with a 50-15 overall record during the 2018-19 season and a 27-4 mark during NFC competition. Her 87.10% win percentage in NFC bouts was good for third overall in the NFC and tops among Wellesley fencers. Park closed out the NFC Conference season by posting a 14-1 record at the third NFC Conference Meet on February 9 at Tufts, winning her last six bouts in-a-row to help the Blue close out the day with a 5-1 record.
 
Brie Maurer | Jr. | Fredericksburg, Va. | Second Team Foil
 
Maurer earns her second consecutive Second Team All-Star honor in foil following an NFC Conference season in which she finished with a 27-6 record and an 81.82% win percentage. Maurer had a team leading 65 bout victories through all competitions in 2018-19, going 65-16 overall. She opened the NFC season with a 14-4 record at the first conference meet before closing the year with a 13-2 mark at the third NFC Conference competition. 
 
Yasemin Ersen | Fy. | Newton, Mass. | Second Team Sabre
 
Ersen put together a 53-16 overall record during her rookie season for the Blue, finishing with a 26-6 mark in NFC Conference competition. Ersen shot up the conference rankings on the final day of the NFC season, going 16-0 in sabre to lead the Blue to a 5-1 record at the third NFC Conference meet. Her 81.25% win percentage during NFC competition was good for fifth in sabre in the conference.
