Wellesley Fencing Posts Perfect Mark at Vassar Invite, Improves to 13-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Wellesley College fencing swept through the Vassar Invitational with a 7-0 record on Saturday at Walker Fieldhouse. The Blue are now 13-0 overall after picking-up wins over Stevens, Fairleigh Dickinson, Yeshiva, LIU, Hunter, Sacred Heart, and Haverford.

Junior Lauren Park (Wayne, N.J.) was 13-1 in sabre to lead the Blue, while classmate Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) finished 13-3 to pace the epee squad. First year Isabella Stewart (Scarsdale, N.Y.) finished 11-2 to lead the foil squad.

Wellesley 20, Stevens 7

7-2 wins in foil and sabre and a 6-3 victory in epee helped the Blue open the day with a 20-7 win over Stevens. First year Kimberley Kimura (Los Angeles, Calif.) clinched the win in epee with a victory in the final round that put the Blue ahead, 5-3. Park and Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) were both 3-0 in foil and sabre, respectively, while Calventus-Coveney was 3-0 in epee.

Wellesley 19, Fairleigh Dickinson 8

The Blue moved to 2-0 behind the strength of a 9-0 win from the sabre squad and 5-4 wins in foil and epee. The Blue earned three wins in sabre and six wins by default. Sarah Pardo (Watertown, Mass.) clinched the Blue win in epee in the first bought of the third round. Maurer's win by default in the final round of foil clinched the win in the weapon. 

Wellesley 25, Yeshiva 2

The Blue earned nine victories by default in a 25-2 victory over Yeshiva. First years Clara Brotzen-Smith (Houston, Texas) and Sejal Saxena (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and Lucille Tsao (Succasunna, N.J.) each went 2-0 in foil, while Pardo and Sam Wolstenholme-Britt (Cary, N.C.) were each 2-0 in epee and Hanamei Shao (Vandenberg AFB, Calif.) posted a 2-0 mark in sabre. 

Wellesley 24, LIU 3

Wellesley earned another lopsided victory in a 24-3 win over LIU. The Blue defeated the Sharks for the second week in-a-row following a 22-5 victory at the LIU Invitational. Tsao and Stewart each finished 3-0 in foil, while Calventus-Coveney helped lead the epee squad to a 7-2 win and Yasemin Ersen (Newton, Mass.) was 2-0 to lead the sabre squad to an 8-1 win.  

Wellesley 26, Hunter 1

Wellesley cruised past Hunter, 26-1. The Blue earned 12 wins by default, finishing with wins of 9-0 in sabre and foil and 8-1 in epee. Corinne Wilklow (Fairfield, Conn.) posted her first 3-0 round of the season in epee in the win. 

Wellesley 20, Sacred Heart 7 

6-3 wins in epee and sabre and an 8-1 win in foil helped the Blue defeat Sacred Heart. Maurer was 3-0 to lead the foil squad to victory. Kimura clinched the epee win with a 5-2 victory in her final bout, while Ersen clinched Wellesley's win in sabre in her final bout 

Wellesley 24, Haverford 3

The Blue closed out a perfect 7-0 day with a 24-3 victory over Haverford. Wellesley earned wins of 9-0 in foil and 8-1 in sabre, as well as a 6-3 win in epee. Kimura clinched the win in the second to last bout of epee, earning a 5-3 win. 

Wellesley will return to action next Sunday, November 17, at the first Northeast Fencing Conference Meet of the season. The meer will be hosted by Brown University and begins at 10:00 AM.
