Blue Fencing Opens Northeast Fencing Conference Action with 3-3 Record

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Wellesley College fencing posted a 3-3 record at the first Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season on Sunday at Brown University. The Blue defeated New Hampshire, Sacred Heart, and Brandeis, but fell by just one bout to Boston College, MIT, and the host Bears. 

Junior Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) posted a team-high 12 victories in epee to lead the Blue. Calventus-Coveney finished the day with a 12-4 record. First year Alexia Gilioli (New York, N.Y.) and senior Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) were 11-6 and 10-5, respectively, to lead the foil squad. First year Brooke Dodrill (Boca Raton, Fla.) finished the day 11-7 to lead the sabre squad.

Boston College 14, Wellesley 13

The Eagles handed Wellesley the team's first defeat of the season, as an 8-1 BC win in epee made the difference despite Wellesley winning 6-3 in both foil and sabre. Maurer posted a 3-0 mark to lead the foil squad, while Dodrill clinched the victory in sabre with a win in her third bout.

Wellesley 25, New Hampshire 2

Wellesley had no trouble in a 25-2 victory over the Wildcats. The Blue earned 8-1 victories in epee and sabre and a 9-0 sweep in foil. First years Clara Brotzen-Smith (Houston, Texas), Gilioli, and Sejal Saxena (Chappaqua, N.Y.) each posted 3-0 rounds in foil, while sophomore Sam Wolstenholme-Britt (Cary, N.C.) was 3-0 in epee.

MIT 14, Wellesley 13 

The Blue dropped a narrow final to the Engineers, earning 5-4 wins in foil and epee but falling 6-3 in sabre. First year Isabella Stewart (Scarsdale, N.Y.) clinched the win in foil with a 5-1 victory in the ninth bout, while classmate Kimberley Kimura (Los Angeles, Calif.) was 2-1 in epee, including a win in her final bout to clinch the in epee.

Wellesley 20, Sacred Heart 7 

Maurer posted her second 3-0 round of the day to lead the Blue to a 20-7 win over Sacred Heart for the second straight week. The foil squad finished with an 8-1 mark. Epee earned a narrow 5-4 victory behind 2-1 record from Calventus-Coveney and Kimura. Dodrill was 3-0 to lead the sabre squad to a 7-2 win.

Wellesley 17, Brandeis 10 

The Blue captured two of three weapons to take a 17-10 victory over the Judges. Wellesley defeated Brandeis for the third straight time dating back to last season, winning foil, 6-3 and epee, 7-2. Gilioli was 3-0 in foil, while Calventus-Coveney and Kimura each finished with 3-0 rounds in epee.

Brown 14, Wellesley 13

Brown used a 9-0 victory in foil to overcome Wellesley victories in epee and sabre to take a narrow 14-13 win over the Blue. Calventus-Coveney and Kimura each finished 3-0 in the 8-1 foil win. Dodrill posted her second 3-0 round of the day to help sabre clinch a 5-4 victory.

Wellesley will return to action on Sunday, December 1, at the Brandeis Invitational.
