Blue Fencing Posts 1-2 Mark at Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Wellesley College fencing finished with a 1-2 record on Sunday at the Brandeis Invitational. The Blue defeated Incarnate Word, 16-11, but dropped 19-8 finals to both Cornell and St. John's. An afternoon match-up with Yale was cancelled to allow for traveling teams to return home prior to the arrival of inclement weather.

Wellesley is now 17-5 overall after facing the team's toughest test of the season so far. Senior Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) and first year Isabella Stewart (Scarsdale, N.Y.) each earned three bout victories in three matches to lead the foil squad. Junior Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) and first year Kimberley Kimura (Los Angeles, Calif.) each posted 4-5 records to lead the foil squad. First year Brooke Dodrill (Boca Raton, Fla.) was 4-4 to lead the sabre squad.

Cornell 19, Wellesley 8

The Big Red earned 7-2 victories in both foil and epee and a narrow 5-4 win in sabre to down the Blue, 19-8. Cornell clinched the win in sabre with just three bouts remaining. However, the Blue earned the final two victories in the weapon, as Lauren Park (Wayne, N.J.) and Dodrill closed with back-to-back win.

St. John's 19, Wellesley 8

Paced by an 8-1 in sabre, St. John's captured all three weapons in a 19-8 victory over the Blue. Kimura and Stewart each finished with team-best 2-1 marks in the setback as the Blue dropped a narrow 5-4 decision in epee and the Red Storm took foil by a 6-3 margin.

Wellesley 16, Incarnate Word 11

The Blue ended the day with a victory over Incarnate Word (UIW). An 8-1 Wellesley win in sabre clinched the win despite UIW victories of 5-4 in both foil and epee. UIW clinched the win in foil in the final bout, as Stewart finished with a 2-1 record to lead the Blue. Calventus-Coveney was 2-1 in epee but the Blue dropped five of the first seven bouts in a 5-4 setback in the weapon.

Wellesley will close out the fall semester on Thursday evening, December 5, with a 4:30 PM match at Harvard.
