Rob Charlton was elevated to Head Coach of the Wellesley College fencing program in July 2020. In 2022-23 Charlton was named the USFCA Division III Coach of the Year while Coaching the Division III Newcomer of the Year winners in foil, epee, and sabre.

Charlton has guided the Blue to an 82-37 record over his three seasons as head coach. The Blue have enjoyed the strongest consecutive years in program history over the past three seasons, with 35 fencers qualifying for NCAA Regionals, a 2019-20 NEIFC team championship and 2022-23 NEIFC Championship runner-up, seven NCAA All-Americans, and eight NFC All-Star selections.

Wellesley qualified 35 fencers for NCAA Regionals during his time and has placed third in the Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) in 2019-20 and 2022-23. In 2019-20 Charlton and assistant coaches Andrew Fischl and Elif Soyer Sachs earned NFC Women's Team Coaching Staff of the Year. The honor was the second consecutive for the Blue and Charlton. Charlton also earned the honor as a member of the Blue coaching staff in 2008-09. Charlton, who has been with the Blue fencing program since 2002, served as interim head coach during the 2019-20 season, leading the Blue to a then program-record 24 victories and the team’s second consecutive NEIFC Three-Weapon Team Championship.

Prior to Wellesley, Charlton was an assistant coach at Tufts University, including the 1998-99 season when Tufts was named the NFC Coaching Staff of the year.
