Wellesley Golf Hosts Liberty League Championships This Weekend

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College will serve as the host school for the 2014 Liberty League Women's Golf Championship. The event is being held at the Crumpin-Fox Club in Bernardston, Mass. on April 26th and 27th.

This marks just the second season of the Liberty League women's golf championship. The Liberty League added women's golf as a championship sport in 2012-13. NYU captured the inaugural team championship cruising to victory by 17 strokes in the 36-hole tournament.

NYU will join Liberty League full members St. Lawrence, Union, Vassar and William Smith as well as fellow associate members Mount Holyoke, and Wellesley to comprise the 7-team tournament championship.

The last time all seven league teams competed against one another was at the Vassar Invitational on April 12 and 13. NYU led the Liberty League members with a team total of 662, finishing fourth overall.

NYU senior Kristina Shalhoup looks to help NYU defend its team title from a season ago. Shalhoup was named the ECAC women's Golfer of the Month for March after leading NYU to the team title at the McDaniel Invitational on March 29 after finishing third in the individual competition. The senior captain also fired back-to-back rounds of 79 to record a two-day total of 158 to finish in a tie for fourth at the Vassar Invitational on April 12-13. Shalhoup is currently ranked No. 65 for all women's Division III golfers on Golfstat.com.

Junior Madi Mendiola of Mount Holyoke has been one of the most consistent performers in the Liberty League this season. Mendiola finished tied for fourth and tied for first among Liberty League competitors in the Vassar Invitational, firing a two-day total of 158. Mendiola also placed 10th overall and first among league performers at the Jack Leaman Invitational hosted by Amherst College, April 19-20. Mendiola currently ranks as the highest ranked Liberty League women's golfer as she comes in at No. 49 in the nation according to Golfstat.com.

Claire O'Neil of St. Lawrence was named Liberty League Women's Golfer of the Year a season ago after capturing the individual title in the inaugural Liberty League women's golf championship. The sophomore golfer also marks a third Liberty League competitor ranked on Golfstat.com Top 150. O'Neil currently ranks 98th among all Division III golfers. The sophomore standout captured the NYU Invitational individual title in the fall by sharing medalist honors with Cortland's Rebecca Studen. Her two-day total of 148 broke the previous St. Lawrence school record of 150. In the spring season O'Neil recorded a top-ten finish at the Lonnie Barton Invitational, a tournament comprised of mainly Division I teams.

Teams will tee off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, and at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 27.
