Golf Matches Program Best With 3rd Place Finish at Liberty League Championships

SUFFERN, N.Y. – Wellesley College golf matched a program best with a third place finish at the 2017 Liberty League Golf Championship on Sunday at the Par-72, 5,804 Yard Spook Rock Golf Course. The Blue also placed two golfers in the top-ten, as first year Ryan MacVicar (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) tied for sixth and junior Maya Muldowney (Waunakee, Wis.) finished eighth, to become the first golfers in program history to earn Liberty League All-Conference honors.

Wellesley posted a combined score of 328 on day two, dropping four strokes from Saturday's score of 332 to finish the tournament in 660 strokes. The Blue's previous best finish was third place with a score of 724 at the inaugural Liberty League Championship in 2013.

Led by individual medalists Alyssa Poentis and Arisa Kimura, who each shot 149 (+5) over the two-day tournament, NYU took home the team title and the Liberty League's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with a score of 605 (304-301). Mount Holyoke (648) finished in second place, while Wellesley took third, followed by Vassar (662), St. Lawrence (689), Union (719) and William Smith (762).

MacVicar opened the day in a tie for third, but finished the front nine at +7 on Sunday and ultimately finished her round at +10 (82) to tie for sixth. Her sixth place finish is the best in program history at the Liberty League Championships and her All-Conference second team honors. Muldowney made a significant move up the leader board for the Blue on the tournament's second day, jumping from a tie for 12th up to eighth in the standings with a five-over par round of 77 to also earn All-Conference second team accolades.

First year Naomi Kim (Troy, Mich.) had the biggest improvement on day two, dropping eight strokes to rise from a tie for 21st place and finish in a tie for 15th place with a final round 80. First year Isabelle Chun (Palo Alto, Calif.) tied for 20th, while sophomore Amy (Zilin) Jin (Shenzhen, China) finished in a tie for 26th. Chun fired an 89 on Sunday, while Jin added a round of 92.

The 2017 Liberty League Championship concludes the 2016-17 season for Wellesley College golf, the tenth under the guidance of Head Coach Sherry Makerney.
