Bio

The 2019 Liberty League Women's Golf Coach of the Year, Sherry Makerney enters her 13th season as head coach of the Wellesley golf team in 2019-20.

Makerney helped guide the Blue to the best season in program history in 2018-19, as Wellesley finished the year with multiple program records and a program-best runner-up performance at the 2019 Liberty League Conference Championship. Wellesley earned a program record four Liberty League All-Conference honors in 2018-19, while finishing second at the Ann S. Batchelder Invitational and Amherst's Jack Leaman Invitational. In her first four seasons, Makerney coached Kim Eaton ’11, the 2011 NCAA Division III Golfer of the Year, to All-American honors.

Makerney holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Northern Colorado and is an experienced golf professional with skills in playing, teaching, coaching and marketing. Prior to Wellesley she coached at the Patterson Club in Fairfield, Connecticut. As an LPGA teaching professional, Makerney was successful in growing the ladies golf program and instrumental in the organization and development of all member tournaments and events. She implemented innovative video analysis in her lessons that enabled her to give comprehensive swing evaluation and further aid player development.

Prior to the Patterson Club, Makerney spent two seasons as a certified Golf Digest Teaching Professional at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. She taught numerous golf schools and conducted several ladies only golf events as lead instructor. Makerney also served as the public relations representative for Golf Digest at the Masters tournament in Augusta, Georgia. In addition, Makerney has served as an instructor at Elite Golf Cruises, the Chuck Cook Academy at the Barton Creek Country Club, the Hank Haney Golf Ranch, and Kapalua Golf Club in Maui, Hawaii.

Makerney was a standout member of the golf team at Division II University of Northern Colorado. Serving as team captain, she racked up fourteen top-ten finishes and was named All-North Central Conference. She has continued to maintain a competitive level of play and enjoys playing in competitive tournaments throughout the year.
