Wellesley Lacrosse Senior Claire Canty Named to IWLCA All-Region Team

WELLESLEY, Mass. — The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) announced Monday that Wellesley College lacrosse senior Claire Canty (East Rockaway, N.Y.) has been named to the Berkshire All-Region Second Team. Canty is one of 256 Division III student-athletes to be honored with a selection on one of the All-Regional teams for 2015. These student-athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-American teams, which will be announced on Monday May 18. 

The all-region selection is the second for Canty, as she also garnered all-region second team honors after earning the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Rookie of the Year Award in 2012. A NEWMAC All-Conference honoree in all four years of her collegiate career, Canty earned first team honors in 2015 and 2012 and second team honors in 2013 and 2014. 

Wellesley's leading scorer and co-captain during the 2015 season, Canty recorded 59 points on 29 goals and 30 assists. She racked up 54 draw controls, 22 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers, while her 31 points in conference play ranked third among all scorers in NEWMAC games this season. Canty wrapped up an outstanding four years in Blue in 2015, finishing her career with 222 points, on 128 goals and 94 assists, to go along with 173 draw controls, 78 ground balls and 44 caused turnovers over 58 career games. 

Wellesley went 9-5 overall (5-3 NEWMAC) during the 2015 season, recording the most wins for the program since the 2009 Blue went 9-8. Wellesley finished the regular season in third place, advancing to the NEWMAC Tournament Semifinals for the first time since 2012 before falling to eventual tournament champion MIT.
