MIT Hands Wellesley Lacrosse 17-6 NEWMAC Setback

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- Wellesley College lacrosse suffered a 17-6 setback in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action against MIT on Saturday afternoon at the Jack Barry Field. The Blue drop to 0-11 on their season and 0-3 in conference play, while the Engineers improve to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the NEWMAC.

Senior Katie Notarangelo (Foxboro, Mass.) and junior Cecilia McCormick (Islip, N.Y.) combined for 10 goals, scoring five apiece to lead the Engineers. Senior Emily Young (La Jolla, Calif.) netted four goals, two assists, and six draw controls. Junior Ana Flooks (Weston, Conn.), first year Allison Pinto (Ann Arbor, Mich.), and sophomore Emily Ryeom (New York, N.Y.) all recorded a goal each to round out scoring for MIT.

Wellesley was led by junior Dacia Persky (Las Vegas, Nev.) with three goals and two assists. Senior Jenny Gubner (Pleasanton, Calif.), first years Carson Dennis (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.), and Kat Gallison (Portsmouth, R.I.) each tallied a goal. Senior Jenna Mulrenan (Glen Ridge, N.J.) recorded a game-high four caused turnovers, as well as three ground balls and four draw controls.

Wellesley got on the board first at 29:05 when Mulrenan found Persky to put away her first of the game and take a 1-0 lead. MIT countered at 27:13, when Notarangelo scored a free-position goal that sparked a four goal run, giving the Engineers a 4-1 advantage. Gubner and Dennis scored back-to-back goals at 15:40 and 14:31 to bring the Blue within one, 4-3, but MIT scored the next three goals to extend their lead to 7-3. Persky and Gallison scored the last two goals of the half for Wellesley at 10:37 and 5:03, as the Blue went into halftime trailing 9-5.

MIT scored eight unanswered goals to open the second half, giving them a 17-5 cushion. Persky closed out the game, scoring with seven seconds left on the clock to make the final score 17-6. Despite the loss, Wellesley held the advantage in ground balls, 23-19, but MIT held the advantage in shots, 33-20 and draw controls, 17-8.

Wellesley junior goalkeeper Chloe Tucker (San Ramon, Calif.) had 12 saves in the setback and drops to 0-11 on her season. MIT first year goalkeeper Hannah Adams (Springfield, Va.) earned the win with five saves in the first half and improves to 2-2 for the year. Senior goalkeeper Eva Boal (Princeton Junction, N.J.) made six saves in the second half.

Both teams will continue conference play on Wednesday, April 11 at 4:00 PM. Wellesley will host Wheaton and MIT will travel to Babson.
