Wellesley Lacrosse Celebrates Senior Day With 16-6 Victory Over Mount Holyoke

WELLESLEY, Mass.-- Senior Jenny Gubner (Pleasanton, Calif.) matched a career-high with five points to lead Wellesley College lacrosse to a 16-6 victory over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Wellesley Field's Complex. Wellesley improves to 1-12 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Mount Holyoke drops to 3-9 on their season and 1-3 in the NEWMAC.

Prior to the start of the game, the Blue recognized seniors Mayu Kikuchi (Villanova, Pa.), Jenna Mulrenan (Glen Ridge, N.J.), and Jenny Gubner for their contributions to the program. 

Gubner paced the Blue with four goals, one assist, and three caused turnovers. Junior Dacia Persky (Las Vegas, Nev.) recorded a hat trick and dished out two assists. Junior Mariana Hernandez (Orlando, Fla.), first years Carson Dennis (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.), and Kat Gallison (Portsmouth, R.I.) all scored two goals apiece in the victory. Kikuchi, junior Ellie Chalphin (Philadelphia, Pa.), and first year Mikaela Smith (Concord, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for Wellesley, all adding a goal each.

Senior Kaitlin Braz (Tolland, Conn.) led Mount Holyoke with two goals and three ground balls. Senior Leila Kouakou (Leeds, Mass.), juniors Mazzie Meotti (South Glastonbury, Conn.), Deyscha Smith (Boston, Mass.), sophomore Julianna Rankin (Annapolis, Md.) each scored a goal for the Lyons.

Meotti opened the scoring at 28:35 to give Mount Holyoke a 1-0 lead. Chalphin scored first for Wellesley at 27:25, sparking a five-goal run that was capped when Persky set-up Kikuchi at 18:23 to give the Blue a 5-1 advantage. Braz and Kouakou each added goals for the Lyons before the half, but Wellesley held a 6-3 lead at the break after Smith added her second of the year at 4:53.

Wellesley erupted for six unanswered goals to take control of the game at the start of the second half. Dennis and Persky each scored twice and Gubner added her first of the game, before Gallison capped the run at 18:20 to make the score 12-3 Wellesley. Smith ended the run, scoring a free position goal for the Lyons to cut their deficit to 12-4. However, Gubner went on to record three goals and an assist in the final 15:16 minutes of play as Wellesley raced to the 16-6 victory. 

Wellesley held the advantage in draw controls, 16-8, shots 34-13, and ground balls, 28-13. 

Wellesley junior goalkeeper Chloe Tucker (San Ramon, Calif.) record four saves in her first win (1-12) of the season. Mount Holyoke sophomore goalkeeper Mia Wysocki (Longmeadow, Mass.) made 13 saves in the setback (3-7) on her season.

Both teams will play again on Wednesday, April 18. Wellesley will travel to Coast Guard Academy for a 4:00 PM start, while Mount Holyoke will host Springfield at 6:00 PM.
