Wellesley Lacrosse Drops 20-4 NEWMAC Setback Against Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.-- Wellesley College lacrosse dropped a 20-4 setback in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Saturday afternoon against Springfield College at Stagg Field. Wellesley falls to 1-14 overall and 1-6 in conference play, while Springfield improves to 11-5 on their season and 6-1 in the NEWMAC.

Springfield was led by senior Kayla Schroeher (Riverhead, N.Y.) with five goals. Classmate Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) tallied a hat-trick with three helpers and a game-high nine draw controls. Junior Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H.) put away three goals for the Pride and senior Ann Mahoney (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored two goals and had a game-high, seven ground balls. First year Katie Campbell (Somers, N.Y.), juniors Taylor Kane (Woburn, Mass.), Katie Stallone (Seaford, N.Y.) and Allie Goddard (Acton, Mass.), and seniors Kristen Steidler (Somers, Conn.) and Julia Bireley (Franklin, Mass.) all recorded a goal each for Springfield.

Senior Jenny Gubner (Pleasanton, Calif.) paced the Blue with two goals and juniors Olivia Strobl (Stafford, Va.) and Mariana Hernandez (Orlando, Fla.) both scored a goal each in the setback. Senior Jenna Mulrenan (Glen Ridge, N.J.) secured two draw controls, grabbed three ground balls, and caused two turnovers in the contest.

Springfield opened the game on a three-goal run sparked by Schroeher, with her first of the game at 25:10. Hernandez put the Blue on the board at 15:42, scoring her sixth of the season with a free-position shot to make it 3-1. Schroeher fired back to give the Pride their fourth goal at 15:21. Gubner and Strobl combined for the last two goals of the half for Wellesley, but the Pride held on to a 8-3 lead to close out the first half.

Springfield scored the first two goals of the second half to extend their lead to 10-3. Gubner put away her second of the game for Wellesley at 23:20 to cut the deficit to 10-4. Springfield answered by scoring the last 10 goals of the game to hold the 20-4 victory. Springfield held the advantage in ground balls, 21-18, draw controls, 17-9, and shots 34-14.

Wellesley junior goalkeeper Chloe Tucker (San Ramon, Calif.) recorded 12 saves in the setback and is now 1-14 on the season. Springfield sophomore goalkeeper Brenna Keefe (Acton, Mass.) made 10 saves in the contest and improves to 11-5 on her season.

Wellesley returns home on Wednesday, April 25 against Emerson at 4:00 PM. Springfield will travel to Emerson on Saturday, April 28 with a 1:00 PM start, to finish their regular season.
