Wellesley Lacrosse Falls In Midweek Match-up at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. – Juniors Molly Covarrubias (Framingham, Mass.) and Lilly Callahan (Wilbraham, Mass.) combined for 15 points to lift Wheaton College to a 20-4 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Wellesley College lacrosse on Wednesday night at Nordin Field.

The Lyons are now a perfect 3-0 in NEWMAC games, improving to 5-6 overall with the team's second win in the last five days. The Blue drop to 5-7 on the year and are now 1-3 in conference.

Covarrubias scored a game-high six goals, all in the second half, while adding two assists. Callahan netted all five of her goals in the first half and added a pair of second half assists. Junior Kyra Schwartzman (Kennebunk, Maine) chipped in with four goals, as seven different Wheaton players scored in the contest. Schwartzman also had a game-high five ground balls.

Seniors Ellie Chalphin (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Mariana Hernandez (Orlando, Fla.), sophomore Carson Dennis (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.), and first year Eleanor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) scored for Wellesley. Junior Maya Sullivan (Cumberland, R.I.) finished with a team-best three ground balls. First year Lorna Li (Berwick, Maine) took the loss in net, dropping to 4-5 on the year.

Wheaton never trailed in the game, taking a 3-0 by the 18:14 mark of the first half. Senior Dacia Persky (Las Vegas, Nev.) set-up Hernandez at 16:31 to make the score 3-1, but Wheaton would eventually take a 7-2 lead into halftime. Wheaton would continue to build on the advantage after the break, scoring eight-straight goals following the final Blue goal at 19:10, to earn the 20-4 victory. 

Wheaton picked-up 25 ground balls, while the Blue scooped up 17. The Lyons also had a 32-13 advantage in shots. Sophomore Jena Casman (Woodbridge, Conn.) made six saves to pick-up the win (5-6) for the Lyons.

Wellesley will travel to Seven Sisters rival Mount Holyoke for a NEWMAC game on Saturday, April 13, at 1:00 PM. Wheaton will also play Saturday at 1:00 PM, when the Lyons take on Springfield.
