Lacrosse Comes Up Short to Worcester St., 12-10

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Six different players scored for the Blue in a 12-10 loss at home to non-conference opponent Worcester St. on Tuesday evening from Butler Stadium.

Senior Eleanor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) finished with a team-high three goals and seven draw controls for the Blue. Junior Liz Sugg (Palermo, Maine) and senior Izzy Burdick (Scarborough, Maine) each added a pair of goals. The Blue finished 3-6 as a team on free position shots.

Junior Shea Jarvis (Auburn, Mass.) controlled the offensive end and scored four of the 12 goals for the Lancers. Senior Clare Conway (Billerica, Mass.) also recorded four goals on six shots in the win.

Just under two minutes into the contest, Mallett found the back of the net to give Wellesley an early lead. The senior then added a second goal, followed by Sugg for a third and the Blue took a 3-0 lead at the 10:36 mark in the first quarter. Jarvis finally answered for the Lancers with an unassisted goal in the middle of the period. Senior Zoe Reynolds (Downers Grove, Ill.) added a Blue marker off an assist by Burdick and Wellelsey led 4-1 after one. 

After owning a four goal lead, the Lancers responded by scoring five unanswered goals in the second. Jarvis netted two of the five in the stretch to help Worcester St. hold a 6-5 lead at halftime. The two teams went back-and-forth in third with Sugg and Willa McGough (Plainfield, N.H.) both scoring for the Blue. The fourth quarter began with sophomore Gabrielle Shell ( Upper Arlington, Ohio) scoring on a free position shot for the Blue. Just over two minutes later, Jarvis added her fifth goal of the contest to give the Lancers a 10-8 lead with 10:05 remaining. 

With their backs against the wall and clock running out, the Blue put the pressure on. Burdick found an opening and fired a shot off the post which was picked up by Mallett and sent home for a goal. First year Anna Tutek (Trumbull, Conn.) then forced a turnover on the following possession which led to a free position goal by Burdick to tie the game at 10-10 with 6:54 remaining. After three solid defensive minutes by both squads, Conway netted her 25th goal of the season to give Worcester St. the lead. The Lancers then forced a turnover and Hannah Erickson (Dunstable, Mass.) put the game away with the 12th team goal.

Blue keeper Lorna Li (Taunton, Mass.) was solid behind the net with 18 saves and 11 ground balls. Lancer keeper Sofia Perivolotis (Littleton, Mass.) finished with seven saves on 17 shots.

The Blue look to get back on track on Friday, April 8 at Clark starting at 7:30 PM. Worcester St. will remain on the road for a date with Mass. Maritime on Friday, April 8 at 7:00 PM.
