Babson Topples Blue Lacrosse, 22-5

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Junior Courtney Kaskey (Winnetka, Ill.) and first year Kathryn Blake (Medfield, Mass.) eached scored four goals and junior Erin Jayne (Merrimac, Mass.) registered a game-high six points, as Babson College defeated Wellesley College 22-5 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday at MacDowell Field. 

Babson, now winners of four straight, improves to 9-5 overall and 5-1 in NEWMAC games. Wellesley drops to 3-9 on the season and 1-5 in conference play. 

Babson scored 15 unanswered goals to open the game and took a 15-0 lead into halftime following an overwhelming first half performance. Jayne recorded four of her game-high six points in the opening quarter, scoring the game's first goal at 11:34 while setting-up three straight Babson goals from Nicole Darveau (Sudbury, Mass.) at 6:26, Kaskey at 5:04 and Darveau again at 4:22. The Beavers had an 8-0 advantage after the opening quarter. 

Jayne made it 9-0 with a free position shot at the start of the second. The hosts added six more goals before the break, with Blake, Kaskey and Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) each netting a pair of goals in the second quarter.

Wellesley senior Eleanor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) got the Blue on the board at the start of the second half, scoring the first of her two goals on a free position attempt at 14:06. Babson followed Mallett's marker with four more goals before Wellesley junior Liz Sugg (Palermo, Maine) scored the second Wellesley goal at 2:29 of the third to make the score 19-2. 

Wellesley sophomore Willa McGough (Plainfield, N.H.) scored the first goal of the fourth quarter to make it back-to-back goals for the Blue. Babson countered with a goal from Nora Lema (Duxbury, Mass.) at 6:45 before Wellesley senior Izzy Burdick (Scarborough, Maine) scored at 4:20. Blake took a feed from Abbie Downer (North Andover, Mass.) at 2:52 to register her fourth goal for Babson before Anna Katherine Sypniewski (Vero Beach, Fla.) netted her third of the second half in the final minute. Mallett scored as time expired in the fourth quarter to make the final 22-5. 

Babson goalkeeper Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) made four saves on nince shots to earn the win (9-5). Wellesley senior goalkeeper Lorna Li (Taunton, Mass.) made six saves in the opening half for the Blue before being replaced by junior Hannah Pangborn (Raleigh, N.C.) in the second half. Babson had a 31-14 advantage in shots in the contest. 

Babson finished the contest with a 16-10 edge in ground balls and a 17-12 advantage in draw controls. The Beavers were perfect on clear attempts (14-14) while forcing the Blue into nine turnovers on clears (8-17). 

Both teams will hit the road to continue NEWMAC play on Wednesday evening at 6:00 PM. Wellesley will travel to Springfield and Babson will visit Emerson.
