Knowles Goal Gives Blue Soccer Double OT Victory

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Wellesley first-year Melise Knowles scored with eight seconds remaining in double overtime to give the Blue soccer team a 2-1 victory against Bryn Mawr College on the road on Saturday afternoon. The game marked the season opener for both squads and was part of the Swarthmore/Bryn Mawr tournament.

As time ticked off the clock, senior Emily DiVito found Knowles in front of a wide open net. Knowles needed just a flick of her foot to score the game-winner for her first collegiate goal.

Wellesley opened with a 1-0 edge thanks to a header from Mary Lou Ferguson in the third minute of play. Ferguson's goal came thanks to an assist from Juliette Frye.

From that point on, the Blue controlled play, holding a decisive 14-6 edge in shots through the first and most of the second half. It appeared as the 1-0 result would hold, until the Owls broke through in the 83rd minute of play. Bryn Mawr's Madeline Mark found Alice Bell streaking in front of the box. Bell beat the Blue keeper to the right, tying the game at 1-1.

Each team recorded a shot in the first extra period. Wellesley's Fry had a shot saved in the 95th minute, while Bryn Mawr's Allegra Levy had a shot go wide left in the 97th minute, preserving the 1-1 contest.

In the second overtime, Wellesley had a pair of shots blocked before Knowles connected for the game-winner.

The Blue finished the game with an 18-9 advantage in shots. In goal, Wellesley keeper Claire Cerda needed just one save to earn her first victory of the season.

Wellesley is back in action tomorrow at Swarthmore, taking on the Garnet at 11:00am.
