Late Goals Lift Swarthmore Over Wellesley Soccer

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- A pair of 73rd minute goals pushed the Swarthmore College soccer team to a win over Wellesley on Sunday afternoon in the Garnet's home tournament. The Blue even their record to 1-1 with the loss, while Swarthmore improves to 2-0 on the season.

The hosts broke a scoreless tie at 72:19 when Rebecca Mayeda took a short pass from Katie Dougherty and beat the Blue keeper one-on-one for a 1-0 lead. Just 23 seconds later, Swarthmore struck again. Hannah Lichtenstein put one into the back of the net on the ride side, striking on an assist from Sarah Hancock, just outside the six yard box.

Swarthmore held a three-shot edge after the first half. The Blue's Claire Cerda picked up three saves in the stanza, while Swarthmore's Reba Magier saved Francesca Lapsley's 29th-minute attempt, keeping the game scoreless.

Wellesley had a string of three-straight attempts midway through the second period of the 0-0 game. Shots from Juliette Fry and Melise Knowles were stopped by Magier, while Knowles added a second attempt that went wide. The Swarthmore defense then thwarted a Blue corner kick opportunity, setting up the 73rd-minute scores.

After the Swarthmore surge, Wellesley's Fry recording a pair of attempts, with one saved and the other going wide. The Blue's Mary Lou Ferguson also had a shot go wide, and the Blue came up empty in their final corner kick opportunity, keeping the final at 2-0 Swarthmore.

Cerda suffered the loss in goal for the Blue despise making nine saves. Swarthmore starter Magier played the first half with one save, while Caela Long made four saves in the second half.

Wellesley now heads back to Massachusetts and will host the Soccer Without Borders Classic at home on Saturday and Sunday.
