Wellesley Soccer Plays To Scoreless Draw With Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Despite holding a 25-10 advantage in shots, Wellesley College soccer played to a 0-0 tie with host Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Smith College Field in Northampton, Mass.

The Blue now stand at 8-7-3 overall, 2-5-1 NEWMAC. Smith moves to 5-6-3 and 3-3-2 in the conference.

Wellesley held a slim 7-6 advantage in corner kicks with the final opportunity coming late in the second overtime period. Unfortunately for Wellesley, Smith was able to clear the back line on the late attempt and maintain the 0-0 scoreline.

Sumner Hanula, Maddie Carlborg, Darlene Dang and Melise Knowles all finished with a pair of shots on goal for the Blue. Jackie Foody also put two shots on target for the Pioneers but it was the goalkeepers that stole the show on the afternoon.

Shelby Hall finished with 12 saves for the Pioneers, including eight in a first half that saw the Blue outshoot Smith 12-5. Hall recorded their fifth shutout of the season for Smith. Wellesley junior Kat Goldsmith recorded three saves on all three Smith shots on goal in the second half and overtime after coming on after the break for senior Claire Cerda.

Wellesley now faces a crucial match in the race for a spot in the NEWMAC playoffs as the Blue will travel to Coast Guard (8-7-1, 3-5-0 NEWMAC) for a 7:00 PM kick-off on Tuesday evening. Smith will also play Tuesday when they host Mount Holyoke at 3:30 PM.
