WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Junior Maddie Carlborg (Burbank, Calif.) and sophomore Melise Knowles (Diablo, Calif.) each tallied a goal and an assist as Wellesley College soccer defeated visiting New England College, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in the Wellesley Classic. The Blue improve to 3-0-0 following their third consecutive home victory to open the season, while New England College drops to 2-3-0 overall.

Carlborg opened the scoring less than eight minutes into the contest, netting her third goal of the season when she buried a pass from Knowles past New England College junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Meegan (Phoenix, Ariz.).

Meegan made three saves in the game for the Pilgrims, as Wellesley held a 14-5 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.

Wellesley would double its lead at 19:28 of the first, as junior Sumner Hanula (La Canada-Flintridge, Calif.) scored her first goal of the season on an assist from sophomore Shawna Dunham (Paradise Valley, Ariz.). Dunham recorded her first point of the year on the play, laying off a pass at the top of the penalty area to Hanula who finished the play with a low shot to Meegan's left.

In the second half, Carlborg and Knowles combined to score the third Wellesley goal, but this time it was Knowles who found the back of the net. Wellesley's leading scoring for a season ago, Knowles tallied her first of 2015 at 50:21 of the second half, finishing on a deflection from Carlborg in front of the goal to make the score 3-0.

Wellesley senior goalkeeper Kat Goldsmith (Armonk, N.Y.) finished with three saves for the Blue, none bigger than her stop on a penalty kick by NEC junior Emily Gubbins (Westmoreland, N.Y.) with less than 15 minutes remaining in the contest. The save helped Goldsmith secure her third straight shutout while running her record to 3-0-0 on the season.

Wellesley will look to open the season 4-0-0 for the first time since 2004 when they host Rutgers-Newark on day two of the Wellesley Classic at 1:00 PM tomorrow, Sunday, September 13. New England College will also be in action at 1:00 PM on Sunday, when they head across town to take on Babson.
