Phillips Scores Twice to Lead Blue Soccer to 2-1 Win at Simmons

BOSTON, Mass. – First year Carley Phillips (Waterford, Conn.) scored a pair of second half goals to rally Wellesley College soccer to a 2-1 victory over host Simmons College on Thursday night at Daly Field.

Phillips' first collegiate goals helped the Blue secure the program's first victory under Head Coach Missy Price and start the year at 1-0-0 overall. Simmons drops to 0-1-0 with the result.

The Sharks opened the scoring in the match, tallying the lone goal of the opening half in the 19th minute when Mikayala Elliott (Lowell, Mass.) got her head on a cross from junior Kashka Gammon (Nashua, N.H.) and redirected it past Blue goalkeeper Olivia Reckley (Grosse Ile, Mich.). The Sharks held on to the 1-0 advantage until the break, despite the Blue holding the hosts without a shot on goal for the remainder of the opening half.

Phillips tied the game just over eight minutes into the second half, scoring her first collegiate goal at 53:07 when she hooked a corner kick directly into the net at the near post. The first year forward would give the Blue the lead for good at 65:36, scoring her second unassisted marker of the contest when she collected a loose ball in the penalty area and fired it into the Simmons net.

Reckley (1-0-0) turned aside a pair of shots in the second half to earn her first collegiate win for the Blue. Simmons junior Casey Halle (Watertown, Mass.) made seven saves to drop to 0-1-0.

Wellesley outshot the Sharks by a 13-3 margin in the contest, also holding a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Phillips unleashed a game-high five shots for the Blue, while Wellesley had 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

Wellesley will travel to Maine-Farmington for the team's next match on Saturday, September 3, at 3:00 PM. Simmons will also be in action on Saturday when they host Lesley at 11:00 AM.
