Wheaton takes 2-0 NEWMAC Win Over Blue Soccer

NORTON, Mass. – A pair of first half goals powered host Wheaton College to a 2-0 win over Wellesley College soccer in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon. 

Both teams are now 1-1-0 early in the conference season. Wheaton, the No. 6 ranked team in the New England region in the latest NSCAA poll, improves to 9-2-0 overall, while the Blue drop to 4-5-0 on the year. 

Wheaton junior Megan Healy (Huntington, N.Y.) scored her conference-leading ninth goal of the season 9:07 into the first half, chipping the ball into the Wellesley goal from the top of penalty area on an assist from senior Alexa Sanchez (Houston, Texas). Wheaton later made the score 2-0 at 25:42 of the first, when junior Caren McCarthy (San Jose, Calif.) clipped the post with a shot before it deflected into the back of the net. The goal was McCarthy's second of the season.

Wheaton finished the game with a 16-11 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in shots on target. Wellesley senior Maddie Carlborg (Burbank, Calif.) had a team-high four shots for the Blue. Junior Melise Knowles (Diablo, Calif.) had a team-best two shots on goal.

Wheaton sophomore Leann Wolf (Santa Maria, Calif.) made five saves to record her fourth shutout on the year. Wolf improved to 7-2-0 on the season with the win. Wellesley first year Olivia Reckley (Grosse Isle, Mich.) also turned away five shots and is now 4-5-0 on the season.

Both teams continue the NEWMAC season on Tuesday, October 4. Wellesley will host cross-town rival Babson at 3:30 PM and Wheaton will host MIT at 4:00 PM.
