WPI Earns 1-0 NEWMAC Win Over Wellesley Soccer

WELLESLEY, Mass. – WPI junior Sophie Gomarlo (Swanzey, N.H.) scored the only goal of the game 18:09 into the second half to help the Engineers take a 1-0 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Wellesley College soccer on Saturday at the Wellesley Fields Complex.

Now winners of four-straight, WPI improves to 11-2-1 on the season and 4-1-0 in NEWMAC play. Wellesley is 5-8-0 on the year and 2-4 in conference play.

Gomarlo used a feed from first year Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, Mass.) to break open an even contest at 63:09. Gomarlo's second of the year made the difference as the Blue failed to beat WPI goalkeeper Gabi Hoops (Stonington, Conn.) despite earning five corner kicks over the final fifteen minutes of play.

Hoops made seven saves, six in the second half, to record her third-consecutive shutout and eighth of the season. Wellesley first year Olivia Reckely (Grosse Ile, Mich.) made six saves of her own in the setback. WPI had a slight edge in shots in the game, 19-16, while the Blue ended the contest with a 9-5 advantage in corner kick opportunities thanks to the late flurry of chances.

Both teams will continue NEWMAC play on Tuesday, October 18, with Wellesley set to host Clark at 4:00 PM and WPI scheduled to welcome Smith at 7:00 PM.
