Wellesley Soccer Drops 4-1 Final To Springfield On Senior Day

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Senior Mikaela Coady (Middletown, Conn.) scored a pair of goals and sophomore Mackenzie Luiz (Newington, Conn.) recorded three assists to lead Springfield College to a 4-1 victory over Wellesley College soccer in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at the Wellesley Fields Complex.
The Pride improve to 10-1 overall and 4-1 in the NEWMAC. The Blue fall 3-7-2 overall and 2-3 in conference play. Prior to the start of the game, the Blue recognized seniors Gen Crotty (Toronto, Ontario), Melise Knowles (Diablo, Calif.) and Zoe Matticks (Minneapolis, Minn.) for their contributions to the program.
The Pride quickly took the lead two and a half minutes into the game when Coady ran on to a through ball from Luiz to make the score 1-0. The visitors continued to lead by one at the half but doubled their edge 4:18 after the intermission when Coady scored her second of the game, and seventh of the season, this time on a through ball from sophomore Sydney Wine (New Braintree, Mass).
The Blue answered at 52:04 when sophomore Emily Tran (Vienna, Va.) scored her first goal of the season, scoring off a deflection from a through ball sent by Crotty that was just out of the grasp of Springfield senior goalkeeper Ciara Boucher (Manchester, Conn.). However, the Wellesley rally was cut short as Springfield scored twice in the final 14 minutes to take the 4-1 final.
Senior Kim Quiles (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) gave the Pride a 3-1 lead at 76:03, finishing on a high arching pass from Luiz. Wine scored the final goal of the game on Luiz's third helper after the Pride connected on a series of passes inside the Blue penalty area.
Wellesley goalkeeper sophomore Olivia Reckley (Grosse Ile, Mich.) made four saves and is now 3-7-2 for the season. Boucher earned the win for Springfield, registering two saves and is now 10-1-0.
Springfield will host Babson in a NEWMAC matchup on Tuesday, October 10, at 4:30 PM. Wellesley will also play on Tuesday when they host MIT in NEWMAC play at 3:30 PM.
