Jung Nets Equalizer To Secure 1-1 Tie For Blue Soccer At Babson

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Sophomore Julia Jung (Oakland, Calif.) netted the equalizer late in the first half to help Wellesley College soccer secure a 1-1 (2OT) tie with crosstown rival Babson College in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

Wellesley (6-8-3 overall) ends the NEWMAC regular season with a 5-4-1 record and has qualified for the NEWMAC Championship tournament. The Blue are currently in third place in the conference standings but will have to wait for the conclusion of conference play this week before they find out their first round opponent and location. Babson is now 7-7-3 overall and 4-2-3 in conference play.

The Beavers grabbed the lead in the first half on Kathryn Clark's (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) sixth goal of the season. The Babson junior forward scored for the second-straight game when she finished on an assist from senior Victoria Penta (Belmont, Mass.) 16:45 into the first.

The hosts held the lead until the 44th minute when Jung found the back of the net for the second time this season. Senior Gen Crotty (Toronto, Ontario) played Jung in with a right to left through ball that split the Babson defense and allowed Jung to slip the ball past Babson junior goalkeeper Maddison Gierschick (Hopkinton, Mass.).

Gierschick finished the contest with nine saves for the Beavers, as Wellesley outshot Babson by an 18-8 margin. Wellesley sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Reckley (Grosse Ile, Mich.) finished with five saves.

Wellesley senior Melise Knowles (Diablo, Calif.) registered a game-high five shots, getting three on frame. Knowles had the best chance of overtime, when she rang the ball off the crossbar with just over five minutes left in the second overtime period.

Wellesley will play in the NEWMAC Tournament next Tuesday, October 31. The date, time, and location for the contest are TBA. Babson will travel to Mount Holyoke for their NEWMAC regular season finale on Saturday, October 28, at 1:00 PM.
