WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wesleyan University (Conn.) scored a goal in each half to earn a 2-0 non-conference win over Wellesley College soccer on Sunday afternoon at the Wellesley Fields Complex.

The Cardinals improved to 2-1-0 with the victory in the first match-up between the two teams since the 2000 season. Wellesley is now 2-2-0 on the year and 1-2-0 at home.

Senior Liz Young's (Lincoln, R.I.) second of the season was the first of the game and the eventual game-winner for the Cardinals. Young volleyed a cross from sophomore Gianna Argento (Bayville, N.J.) past Blue goalkeeper Olivia Reckley (Grosse Ile, Mich.) in the 21st minute to give the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage.

Wesleyan doubled their lead in the second half when sophomore Emily Ribatt (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) connected with a left to right cross from junior Allie Goss (Glastonbury, Conn.) and found the back of the net. The ball took a touch off a Wellesley defender in the area but it wasn't enough to redirect the drive from Goss on its way to Ribatt.

The Cardinals finished with a 12-1 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner chances. First year goalkeeper Sarah Hammond (Canton, Mich.) earned her first career win and shutout for Wesleyan. Reckley made three saves for the Blue and is now 2-2-0 overall.

Wellesley will travel to Endicott for a 7:00 PM contest on Tuesday, September 11. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday. Wesleyan will open their conference schedule at Tufts at 6:30 PM on Wednesday.
