Wellesley Soccer Plays to 1-1 Tie with Coast Guard

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College soccer finished in a 1-1 tie with the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at the Wellesley Fields Complex.

Wellesley is now 3-5-1 on the season and 0-2-1 in conference play. Coast Guard is now 4-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the NEWMAC.

Both goals were scored in the first half. Wellesley junior Emily Tran (Vienna, Va.) put the Blue on the board first in the 13th minute when she sent the ball in on a cross, scoring her first goal of the season. However, Coast Guard answered in the 21st minute to tie the game, 1-1, when first year Brielle Pearce (Jupiter, Fla.) sent a ball through to junior Claire Hurley (Waterford, Conn.). Hurley finished on the play to score her fourth goal of the season.

The Bears outshot the Blue in the second half, 11-4, but Wellesley held on defensively to maintain the 1-1 tie. Coast Guard continued to attack in overtime, outshooting Wellesley, 7-0. Wellesley junior Olivia Reckley (Grosse Ile, Mich.) made a few big saves in overtime, including one in the 97th minute, as she made a diving save to the far post off a shot from a free kick outside of the box.

Coast Guard held the final advantage in shots, 22-7, and corner kicks, 8-1. Reckley made six saves for the Blue and is now 3-5-1 on the season. Coast Guard first year goalkeeper Katharina Commins (Altoona, Iowa) recorded four saves and is 4-4-1 on the season.

Both teams will continue NEWMAC play on Tuesday, October 2. Wellesley will travel to Wheaton for a 4:00 PM start and Coast Guard will host Mount Holyoke at 7:00 PM.
