Springfield Hands Wellesley Soccer 2-0 NEWMAC Setback

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.-- Wellesley College soccer fell 2-0 to Springfield College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at the Brock-Affleck Field.

Wellesley is now 3-7-1 overall and 0-4-1 in NEWMAC action. Springfield improves to 9-1-1 on the season and 5-0 in conference play.

Springfield got on the board first in the 4th minute when junior Mackenzie Luiz (Newington, Conn.) picked-up a through ball from sophomore Sara Swetland (Manchester, N.H.) just inside the box to score her third goal of the season. Springfield outshot Wellesley 18-0 in the first half as they held a 1-0 edge heading into halftime.

The Pride extended their lead to 2-0 in the 57th minute when Luiz sent the ball to first year Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.) to put away her 10th goal of the season. Springfield held the final advantage in shots, 28-1, and in corner kicks, 7-0, in the game.

Wellesley junior goalkeeper Olivia Reckley (Grosse Ile, Mich.) made eight saves in the setback and is 3-7-1 on the season. Springfield senior goalkeeper Jackie Davis (Ringoes, N.J.) improves to 5-1-1 on the season with the shutout.

Both teams will play again on Tuesday, October 9. Wellesley will travel to MIT for a 4:00 PM start. Springfield will travel to Babson with a 6:00 PM kickoff.
