Fernandez Lifts Blue Soccer to 1-0 Win at Suffolk

BOSTON -- Junior Remi Fernandez (Valencia, Spain) scored in the opening minute of the second half to lift Wellesley College soccer to a 1-0 non-conference victory over Suffolk on Saturday afternoon at James A. Sartori Stadium.

Junior Lauren Park (Richmond, Va.) made three second half saves to preserve the shutout for Wellesley (2-1-0 overall). The Blue out shot the Rams 17-7 in the contest as Suffolk (1-2-1 overall) got seven saves from first year goalkeeper Maddie Brooks (Weatogue, Conn.) in her collegiate debut.

Fernandez scored 25 seconds into the second half to break the scoreless tie. Suffolk cleared the initial Blue rush off the kickoff but the clearance for the Rams' defense landed at the feet of Fernandez who sent the ball back into the Suffolk goal from 30 yards out. The goal was the second of Fernandez's career and first of the season.

Suffolk countered with six of its seven shots in the game in the second half but Park and the Blue stood up to the task. The final Suffolk effort came with 1:31 left when a shot by Delaney Hall (East Bridgewater, Mass.) was saved by Park.

Wellesley will return home to host Lesley in non-conference play on Wednesday at 4:00 PM. Suffolk will travel to place Nichols in its next contest on Thursday at 4:00 PM.
