Early Goal Sends Coast Guard Past Wellesley Soccer, 1-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Backed by junior Karagan Bulger's (Manahawkin, N.J.) third goal of the season, the United States Coast Guard Academy topped Wellesley College soccer 1-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Wellesley Fields Complex.

The Bears struck early, with Bulger finding the back of the net 8:17 into the first half on a shot assisted by junior Chase Merrick (Tallahassee, Fla.). That was all it would take for the visitors as sophomore goalie Emily Scharnitzky (Charleston, S.C.) saved all 10 shots that Wellesley (3-2-0, 0-1-0 NEWMAC) put on goal to record her second shutout of the season for Coast Guard (4-2-0, 1-0-0 NEWMAC).

Wellesley nearly found the net on two occasions. Sophomore Juliana Mytko (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) put a shot on goal from the right side that Scharnitzky put an outstretched hand on. In the second half, sophomore Marleigh Ausbrooks (Washington, D.C.) curled a shot to the lower right that seemed destined to find the goal. Once again Scharnitzky kept the score clean for the Bears, preventing a Wellesley comeback.

Wellesley finished the game with a 10-2 lead in shots on goal. Senior Kendall Lincoln (San Diego, Calif.) recorded a save, while Ausbrooks, Mytko, and junior Paige Sangston (Greenwich, Conn.) all had multiple shots on goal.

An out of conference road game at Framingham State is next for Wellesley at 4:30 PM on Wednesday. The Bears return to action next Saturday, hosting Babson in a NEWMAC contest at 12:00 PM.
