Advani, Lin, Zhang Represent Blue Squash at DIII Individual Championships

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Wellesley College squash sophomore Rhea Advani and first years Phyllis Lin and Sarah Zhang represented the Blue this weekend at the Division III Individual Tournament at Wesleyan University. Zhang, Lin and Advani all recorded victories on the weekend, taking part in the competition that also included representatives from host Wesleyan, Amherst, Bates, Conn. College, Hamilton, MIT, Mount Holyoke and Williams. 

The Blue opened play on Friday night, with Zhang scoring a victory in the first round of the A Draw. Zhang defeated Arielle Lehman of Amherst in a hard fought five-game match by scores of 4/11, 11/5, 11/7, 8/11, 11/9. With the victory, Zhang advanced to Saturday's A Draw second round and a matchup of Nicole Friedman of Williams. 

Zhang's run in the A Draw bracket would end at the hands of Friedman, as the Williams number one earned a sweep (7-11, 4-11, 4-11). Zhang then ended the weekend with a loss on Saturday to Hilary Gray of Hamilton, by scores of 11-4, 11-8, 11-9, in the consolation bracket. 

Lin wasn't as fortunate in her Friday night matchup, as she was relegated to the consolation bracket after falling in three sets to eventual tournament champion Laila Samy of Wesleyan by scores of 11-1, 11-3, and 11-3. Lin bounced back in the A Draw consolation bracket defeating Leasea Bourke of Bates in five games, 11-7, 8-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9. In the second round of the A Draw consolation, Lin was eliminated on Saturday after falling to Myriam Kelly of Bates 11-6, 11-4, 11-5.

In the B Draw, Advani scored a sweep over Xianger Fei of Mount Holyoke in Friday night's qualification round, thanks to 11-9, 11-3, and 11-6 victories. On Saturday, in the first round of the B Draw, Advani was swept by Tiana Palmer-Poroner of Amherst, 7-11, 10-12, 4-11, dropping the Blue sophomore to the B Draw consolation bracket. Advani scored her second victory of the weekend in the consolation bracket, defeating Annie Ferreira of Wesleyan 11-0, 11-4, 11-2. However, Advani was also eliminated from the tournament on Saturday, falling to Isabelle Weissman of Hamilton 11-5, 11-8, 11-4.

Blue squash will take part in a scrimmage with Harvard on Sunday, December 7 before returning to action on Wednesday January 14 and 7:00 PM when they host Northeastern at Dana Hall at 7:00 PM.
