Blue Squash Cruises to 9-0 Wins over Haverford, Northwestern

CAMBRIDGE, Mass — Wellesley College squash swept its way to a pair of big victories on Saturday at MIT, opening 2015 by defeating both Haverford College and Northwestern University by 9-0 scores to improve to 8-2 overall. 

In Wellesley's opening match of the day, first years Sarah Zhang and Phyllis Lin each won in four games in the number one and two match ups. Zhang defeated Isabelle Gotuaco, 11-3, 11-4, 8-11, 11-8, while Lin toped Bethany Simmons by a count of 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 11-4. First year Meredith Curry was the only other Wellesley player to win in four games, defeating Sabina Aliev 11-6, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5 in the number nine matchup. 

The Blue recorded 3-0 victories in every other matchup versus the Fords, as senior Sarah Tammaro (11-4,11-1,11-2), juniors Gabriella Wynne (11-4,11-2,11-5) and Kate Loftus (11-2, 11-4, 11-6), and sophomores Meera Nayar (11-9, 11-6, 11-4), Navisha Gupta (11-9, 11-6, 11-7), and Ruby Feng (11-2, 11-2, 11-0) all swept to victories. 

Against the Wildcats it was more of the same for the Blue as Wellesley won all nine games by 3-0 scores to take the 9-0 victory. Zhang and Lin continued to set the pace for the Blue, with Zhang defeating Northwestern's Jamie Leventhal (11-0, 11-3, 11-7) before Lin cruised to victory over Marisa Bhargava (11-4, 11-5, 11-2). 

Nayar earned her second victory of the day with an 11-3, 11-8, 11-2 win at number three before Wynne delivered the most lopsided victory of the day for the Blue with an 11-3, 11-2, 11-1 sweep in the number four matchup. Gupta (11-6, 11-6, 11-8), Feng (11-1, 11-7, 11-3), Loftus 11-4, 11-2, 11-3), Tammarro (11-7, 11-6, 11-3) and Curry (11-4, 11-1, 11-3) all then recorded victories in the five through seven match-ups. 

The Blue will return to the courts on Tuesday evening when they travel to take on Connecticut College at 4:30 PM.
