Stanford Hands Blue Squash First Loss of Season

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Wellesley College squash suffered its first setback of the season on Friday evening, dropping a 9-0 final to Stanford University at Harvard University's Murr Center Courts. Wellesley is now 2-1 on the year, while Stanford opened the season Friday evening with matches versus the Blue, host Harvard University and Bates College.

The Cardinal, currently ranked number nine in the College Squash Association, earned 3-0 victories in all but one match-up on the evening.

Senior Kate Loftus (Portland, Ore.) was the only Wellesley player to take a game, earning a 12-10 win in the second game at number six versus Stanford senior, and Wellesley, Mass. native, Abby Giannuzzi. Giannuzzi, who took the first game, 11-6, rebounded with 11-7 and 11-3 wins in the third and fourth games to take the 3-1 win.

Stanford continued on to sweep the remainder of the matchups. Wellesley sophomores Sarah Zhang (Lexington, Mass.) and Phyllis Lin (Acton, Mass.) each battled in the one and two spots on the ladder, but ultimately fell 3-0, respectively. Zhang was defeated by first year Tara Shannon (Calgary, Alberta), while Lin dropped her match to sophomore Christie Huchro (Scarborough, N.Y.).

Wellesley will continue a busy weekend tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM when they take on Colby at MIT. The Blue will also be in action on Sunday, returning to Harvard for a 2:00 PM match with Hamilton.
