Blue Squash Earns Victories Over William Smith, Smith

SOUTH HADLEY/NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Wellesley College squash took to the road on Saturday, winning two matches in two different locations. The Blue opened the day with a 7-2 win over William Smith College in a match played at Mount Holyoke College. Wellesley then traveled down the road to take on Smith College, before coming away with a 9-0 sweep. Wellesley is now 7-4 on the season.

The Blue, ranked 22nd in the College Squash Association, earned an important 7-2 victory over No. 24 William Smith.

Sophomore Sarah Zhang (Lexington, Mass.), senior Gabriella Wynne (Brookline, Mass.), and juniors Rhea Advani (Mumbai, India) and Ruby Feng (Old Lyme, Conn.) all earned 3-0 sweeps in the Blue's win over the Herons.

Zhang downed Michaelann Denton (Kingston, Jamaica), 11-0, 11-4, 11-5, at number two, while Wynne defeated Peyton Capute (Baltimore, Md.), 11-8, 11-6, 11-4, at number four, Advani bested Brooke Hayes (West Hartford, Conn.), 11-3, 11-7, 11-8, at number five and Feng topped Stacey Maceda (The Bronx, N.Y.), 14-12, 11-6, 11-7, at number nine.

The Blue also got victories at positions three, six and eight, courtesy of four game wins from Meera Nayar (Mamaroneck, N.Y.), sophomore Haley Connor (Boston, Mass.) and junior Navisha Gupta (Mumbai, India).

Wellesley cruised past Seven Sisters rival Smith in the afternoon match, earning 3-0 wins at every position while taking the final two match-ups by default.

Sophomore Phyllis Lin (Acton, Mass.) defeated Geena Cho, 11-6, 11-3, 11-1, to bounce back from a morning setback at number one. Zhang then earned her second win of the day at number two, defeating Leah Jeon, 11-3, 11-7, 11-4. 

Nayar, Wynne and Connor all swept to wins in matches three through five. Nayar downed Jin Lee, 11-3, 11-1, 11-0, while Wynne got her second 3-0 sweep of the day with an 11-1, 11-0, 11-3 triumph over Gracie Maull. Connor topped Caroline Previte 11-2, 11-5, 11-2.

Wellesley completed the sweep thanks to wins from senor Kate Loftus (Portland, Ore.) and Gupta. Loftus defeated Julia Yun 11-7, 11-6, 11-3, at number six, while Gupta earned an 11-2, 11-3, 11-1 win over Leslie Hillsamer at seven.

Wellesley squash continues the season on Wednesday evening with a 6:00 PM match versus Tufts at MIT.
