Blue Squash Starts Season With 8-1 Triumph Over Boston College

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College squash kicked-off the 2016-17 season on Tuesday evening, earning a resounding 8-1 victory over local rival Boston College at the Dana Hall School's Shipley Center courts. 

The 23rd ranked Blue are now 1-0 to start the year, while the 42nd ranked Eagles are 0-1.

Wellesley got out to a 3-0 lead following the first flight of matches, earning wins at No. 3, 6 and 9. First year Eva Mullarkey (Locust Valley, N.Y.) defeated BC's Sabrina Didizian to pick up her first collegiate victory in her first collegiate match. At No. 6, Ruby Feng (Old Lyme, Conn.) swept to an 11-4, 11-5, 11-3, triumph over Chloe Cheng, while Lumi Kinjo (Tokyo, Japan) also earned a 3-0 win an No. 9, defeating Claire Wortsman, 11-3, 11-5, 11-1. 

The Blue sealed the victory in the second flight of matches, getting victories from seniors Meera Nayar (Chicago, Ill.) and Rhea Advani (Mumbai, India) to go ahead 5-0 in the match. Nayar defeated BC team captain Carlie Ladda, 11-9, 11-3, 11-3, at No. 2 and Advani earned an 11-6, 11-6, 11-3 win at No. 5. 

Wellesley went on to get victories at No. 1, 4 and 7. At No. 1, junior Sarah Zhang (Lexington, Mass.) opened with a commanding 11-2 victory before closing out her match 11-5, 12-10. Classmate Haley Connor (Boston, Mass.) added an 11-4, 11-4, 11-6, win at No. 4 and first year Eunbie Coe (Los Angeles, Calif.) became the second Blue first year to notch her first victory on the evening, defeating Luly Dickinson at No. 7, 11-7, 11-3, 11-8.

BC got on the board with a win by Paige Hanauer at No. 8. Hanauer defeat Wellesley junior Meredith Curry (Medfield, Mass.), 14-12, 7-11, 11-8, 12-10. Hanauer would also add an 11-6, 11-7, win over Blue junior Audrey Fok (Great Neck, N.Y.) in the No. 10 exhibition.

Wellesley continues the season on Saturday, November 19, with a 3:00 PM match against Colby College. The match will be played at MIT.
