No. 21 Blue Squash Falls to No. 14 Drexel to Open 2017

PHILADELPHIA -- No. 21 Wellesley College squash opened the second half of the 2016-17 season with a match at Drexel University on Monday evening, dropping a 9-0 decision to the No. 14 ranked Dragons at the the Kline & Specter Squash Center.

Returning to the courts following a 43-day layoff, the Blue dropped to 3-2 on the season with the setback. Drexel bounced back from back-to-back defeats to improve to 3-6 overall.

The Dragons won all nine matches via 3-0 sweeps. Blue first year Eva Mullarkey (Locust Valley, N.Y.) extended her opening game at No. 2 versus Hayley Hughes beyond the 11-point plateau, but fell by a 13-11 final before dropping the next two games 11-1 and 11-3. At No. 1, senior Meera Nayar (Chicago, Ill.) fought to an 11-7 loss in game two after dropping an 11-2 final in her opener, but ultimately fell to Ryan Morgan when Morgan took game three, 11-3.

Drexel clinched the match with victories by Anna Hughes over junior Haley Connor (Boston, Mass.) at No. 3, Fiona Power over first year first year Eunbie Coe (Los Angeles, Calif.) at No. 4 and Kaitlyn Money over senior Ruby Feng (Old Lyme, Conn.) at No. 5. From there, the hosts went on to complete the sweep when Kathryn Bottger defeated junior Meredith Curry (Medfield, Mass.) at No. 6, Maria Diagama topped sophomore Lumi Kinjo (Tokyo, Japan) at No. 7, Kristine Giltvedt bested junior Audrey Fok (Great Neck, N.Y.) at No. 8 and Jennifer White took down first year Elena Ubeda (Natick, Mass.) at No. 9.

Wellesley will play the second of their three matches in four days in the Philadelphia area when they take on Haverford College tomorrow night, January 17, at 6:00 PM.
