No. 21 Wellesley Squash Grabs 8-1 Win at Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. -- Wellesley College squash bounced back on the second night of back-to-back matches, cruising to an 8-1 victory over Haverford College on Tuesday evening at the GIAC Squash Courts.

The 21st ranked Blue improve to 4-2 on the season with the victory over the the Fords, the No. 30 ranked team in the College Squash Association.

Senior Meera Nayar (Chicago, Ill.) survived a five-game marathon in the top match, defeating Isabelle Gotuaco 11-4 in the fifth game after Gotuaco rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the match. Haverford earned a five game victory in the No. 2 match, where Kaitlin Reese defeated Wellesley first year Eva Mullarkey (Locust Valley, N.Y.). Reese and Mullarkey split the opening four games, but Reese captured the deciding game, 11-8.

Wellesley and Haverford split the top two matches in the ladder, but the Blue rolled in the remaining matches, dropping only two games in the 3-9 matches. Junior Haley Connor (Boston, Mass.), first year Eunbie Coe (Los Angeles, Calif.), sophomore Lumi Kinjo (Tokyo, Japan) and junior Audrey Fok (Great Neck, N.Y.) all earned 3-0 sweeps in the match. Connor took down Isabel Agnew at No. 3, while Coe defeated Olivia Franco at No. 4. At No. 7, Kinjo got the better of Anna Kullnigg and Fok swept past Stephanie Lukez at No. 9.

At No. 6, Blue junior Meredith Curry (Medfield, Mass.) got a brief scare when Emilia Cobbs rallied from an 11-8 setback in the opening game with a 12-10 win in the second game. However, Curry asserted herself with an 11-4 game three win and closed out the match with an 11-7 victory in game four. First year Elena Ubeda (Natick, Mass. also dropped her second game, 8-11, after winning the opener, 11-5, but like Curry was able to secure a win with back-to-back 11-8 wins in games three and four.

Wellesley will close out its week in Philadelphia with a 6:30 PM match on Thursday, January 19, at Franklin & Marshall.
