Blue Squash Rallies for 5-4 Win Over Conn. College in CSA Epps Cup 1st Round

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Trailing 4-3, Wellesley College squash clinched wins at No. 1 and No. 4 to clinch the match, 5-4, over Connecticut College in the first round of the 2017 Epps Cup (D Division) at the College Squash Association (CSA) Championship at Princeton University.

The No. 27 ranked Blue improve to 8-10 overall on the season and advance to play No. 26 Hamilton tomorrow at 2:15 PM. The No. 30 ranked Camels (6-17) will take on No. 31 Northeastern in the consolation bracket tomorrow at noon.

Wellesley was down 4-3 with two matches to play after dropping the bottom four matches in the ladder, while winning the matchups at No. 2, 3 and 5. Conn. College's Jacqueline Chu outlasted first year Eunbie Coe (Los Angeles, Calif.) at No. 6, taking a 3-2 win (11-8, 6-11, 4-11, 11-8, 11-6). At No. 7, Liz Varoli defeated junior Meredith Curry (Medfield, Mass.), 3-1 (11-2, 11-4, 6-11, 11-2), before Allie Fuller also picked up a five-game win over sophomore Lumi Kinjo (Tokyo, Japan) (14-12, 10-12, 11-5, 11-13, 11-3) at No. 8. The final Connecticut College win came at No. 9, as Caroline Lippincott topped first year Elena Ubeda (Natick, Mass.), 3-0 (11-7, 11-3, 11-4).

Wins by first year Eva Mullarkey (Locust Valley, N.Y.) at No. 2, junior Haley Connor (Boston, Mass.) at No. 3 and senior Ruby Feng (Old Lyme, Conn.) at No. 5 kept the Blue in the match. Mullarkey swept past Adrienne Sieverding (11-9, 11-6, 11-7), while Connor took down Davis Lemay, 3-1 (11-3, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8) and Feng defeated Anne Holly, 3-1 (11-8, 11-8, 6-11, 11-6).

With the Blue trailing 4-3, the No. 4 and No. 1 matches were taking place simultaneously. Nayar tied the match with a 3-1 win at No. 1, defeating Mawa Ballo (11-8, 11-3, 9-11, 11-7). Just moments later, fellow senior Advani clinched the win for the Blue with a 3-1 (9-11, 11-1, 11-7, 11-5) win, winning her third-straight game after dropping the first game at No. 4.

Wellesley will take on Hamilton tomorrow at 2:15 PM. The winner advances to play the winner of Colby and Mount Holyoke in the Epps Cup final on Sunday at 10:00 AM.
