Wellesley Swimming & Diving Cruises Past Simmons

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Wellesley College Swimming and Diving team posted a 201-102 victory over Simmons College on Saturday at the Holmes Sports Center. The win moves the Blue to 2-0 on the young season, while Simmons was handed its first loss of the season. 

Wellesley was on fire, setting new pool records in the 400-medley relay, the 1000-free, the 200-IM, the 200-free, the 50-back, and the 50-fly. Three Wellesley swimmers finished under the Simmons 50-fly record.

Individually for the Blue, sophomores Dorothy Ren and Ieva Galinyte, and junior Gabby Cooper-Vespa all recorded two wins at the event. Ren won the 50-free (25.20) and the 200-IM (2:16.02), while Galinyte topped the field in both the 200-back (2:18.31) and the 1,000-free (11:02.12). Cooper-Vespa was victorious in both diving events, recording 227.80 points on the 1-meter board and 238.90 points on the 3-meter board. 

Five other Wellesley swimmers recorded individual wins at the meet, as senior Keelin Nave, junior Grace Bachman, sophomore Suman Kumar, and first-years Sarah May and Sharon Wu, all picked up victories. Nave won the 200-free (1:55.75), Bachman topped the field in the 500-free (5:31.12), and Kumar won the 100-fly (1:02.26). May and Wu continued their great starts, as May won the 50-fly (27.25) and Wu won the 50-back (28.40). 

Wellesley also touched the wall first in the 400-medley relay. Senior Emma Mrkonic, sophomore Erin Yang, Nave, and senior Anne Hamilton paired up for a time of 4:11.29 to record the win.

Blue swimming and diving is back in action on Friday, November 22nd. The Blue will have their home opener in Chandler Pool, taking on MIT at 7:00pm.
