School Record Falls as Blue Swimming and Diving Opens NEWMACs

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Wellesley College swimming and diving team kicked off the 2014 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships with a school record time in the 800-free relay. The four day event is being hosted by WPI.

Wellesley's 800-free "A" team of senior Keelin Nave, and sophomores Charlotte Harris, Dorothy Ren, and Ieva Galinyte teamed up for a third-place time of 7:44.33. The foursome shaved over 10 seconds off of the previous school record, set at the 2013 NEWMAC Championships (Harris, Amirkhanashvili, Hamilton, Galinyte).

Wellesley's "B" effort also had a solid race, taking 13th overall as the third fastest "B" team. Blue first-year Sarah May, junior Tiffany Chen, senior Anne Hamilton, and first-year Leah Furman, teamed up to swim a time of 8:00.80.

Only three events were contested tonight, the men's and women's 800-free relay, and the men's 3-meter board.

The meet continues tomorrow with a full slate of events. Preliminaries will be held at 10:00am in the 200-free relay, the 500-free, the 200-IM, the 50-free, and the 400-medley relay. 1-meter diving preliminaries will be held in the afternoon, and finals for the morning events will begin at 6:00pm.
