Swimming & Diving Remains Fourth After Day Two of MIT Winter Invite

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Wellesley College swimming & diving maintained hold of fourth place in the team standings following day two of the MIT Winter Invitational at the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool.

NYU now holds a slight lead over Columbia University, with the Violets totaling 727.5 points to the Lions 724.5 points. Host MIT (640 points) remains in third, followed by the Blue. Wellesley has a 26.5-point edge on fifth place Long Island University-Brooklyn (280 points).

In diving, sophomore Maura Sticco-Ivins (Framingham, Mass.) secured another first-place finish, adding to her 1-meter victory on Friday, by winning the 3-meter competition with a score of 320.00.

Day two started with the 200 Free Relay. Wellesley recorded a time of 1:38.60 in the finals of the 200-Free Relay, as first year Cathy Chen (Parsippany, N.J.) and seniors Dorothy Ren (San Jose, Calif.), Ieva Galinyte (Irvine, Calif.) and Charlotte Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio) took ninth in the A-Final. 

Ren and Harris went on to add top-ten times in two other events. Ren took seventh in the A-Final of the 100 Back with a time of 58.39, while Harris added an eighth place finish in the A-Final of the 200 Free, with a time of 1:56.63. Harris also clocked in at 1:08.61 to take seventh place in the B-Final of the 100 Breaststroke.

Chen continued on to earn the top time for the Blue in the 50 Free Sprint by taking sixth in the B-Final with a time of 24.65.

Karen Wang (Holmdel, N.J.) added an eighth place finish in the A-Final of her second event, the 400 IM. The first year recorded a mark of 4:40.11. Earlier in the evening Wang and classmate Cathy Ye (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) finished second and third in the B-Final of the 200 Fly, with Wang recording a time of 2:10.82 and Ye touching the wall in 2:11.72. 

The Blue concluded day two with a time of 3:59.84 in the 400 Medley Relay, as Ren, Harris, Wang, Chen combined to take seventh place.

The MIT Winter Invitational concludes tomorrow, December 6. Competition on Sunday includes the: 200 Medley Relay, 500 Free, 200 Back, 100 Fly, 200 Breast, 100 Free, 200 IM and 400 Free Relay (Finals Only).
