Wellesley Swimming & Diving Opens NEWMACs With 800 Freestyle Relay

WORCESTER, Mass. – Wellesley College swimming & diving opened the 2017 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday night at Worcester Polytechnic Institute's (WPI) Sports & Recreation Center. 

The Blue took seventh in Thursday's only event, the 800 Freestyle Relay. First years Danielle Peterson (Livingston, N.J.) and Kayleigh Svensson (Palo Alto, Calif.) and sophomores Jessie Feng (Princeton, N.J.) and Sunny Chiang (Troy, Mich.) combined for a time 7:57.43 to finish seventh in the A - Final. Junior Patricia Chen (Natick, Mass.), first year Maggie Haley (Shady Side, Md.), and sophomores Francesca Dong (Princeton Junction, N.J.) and Karen Wang (Holmdel, N.J.)added a sixth place (16th overall) time of 8:13.00 in the B - Final.

MIT leads following day one, collecting 70 points with a first place finish. The Engineers are followed by WPI with 60. Springfield College was four points behind in third. U.S. Coast Guard Academy totaled 52 and Wheaton College shored up the top five with 48. Smith is tied with Wellesley at 42 points, while Clark University ended the night eighth (36). Mount Holyoke College and Babson College share ninth place with 30 points.

Action continues Friday with the 200-yard freestyle relay, 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle, 400-yard medley relay and 1-meter diving beginning with the trials at 10:00 AM. Finals are set to begin at 6:00 PM.
