Chiang’s 400 IM Bronze Highlights Day Three of NEWMACs For Blue Swim & Dive

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Sophomore Sunny Chiang (Troy, Mich.) picked up Wellesley swimming & diving's second medal of the weekend with a third place performance in the 400 Yard IM on day three of the 2017 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming & Diving Championships at Worcester Polytechnic Institute's (WPI) Sports & Recreation Center.

Chiang finished in 4:38.48 to take the bronze, just ahead of classmate Karen Wang's (Holmdel, N.J.) time of 4:40.68, as the Blue teammates combined to give Wellesley two of the top-five spots in the A - Final. First place MIT was the only other team with two swimmers in the top-five.

The Engineers currently lead the overall standings with 985 point. WPI moved back into second with 518.5 points, while Wheaton College (496) sits in third and Springfield College (487) is in fourth. The Blue (348) maintained their hold on fifth following the day's action. The second group is led by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (341). The Bears are followed by Smith College (240.5), Clark University (232), Mount Holyoke College (163) and Babson College (116).

Sophomore Jessie Feng (Princeton, N.J.) picked up the top time for the Blue in the 100 Yard Butterfly, taking third in the B - Final with a time of 59.83. Feng's final time was the 11th fastest between the two finals in the 100 Fly, after she posted the 16th fastest time (1:00.71) in the preliminaries.

The Blue added a ninth place finish in the A - Final of the 100 Yard Breaststroke, where first year Danielle Peterson (Livingston, N.J.) finished in 1:09.08. Peterson was one of only three first years in the conference to qualify for the A - Final in the event. In the 100 Breastroke B - Final, junior Lindsey Wu (Livingston, N.J.) finished as the runner-up with a time of 1:09.95.

Sophomore Cathy Chen (Parsippany, N.J.) grabbed a first place finish in the B - Final of the next event, the 100 yard Backstroke, with a time of 59.18. Chen, Peterson, Wang and sophomore Crystal Zhu (Chelmsford, Mass.) then closed out the session by taking sixth in the 200 Yard Medley Relay in 1:51.08. Wellesley was also sixth in the B - Final of the 200 Medley Relay, behind a time of 1:53.38 from first year Kayleigh Svensson (Palo Alto, Calif.), Wu, Feng, and sophomore Francesca Dong (Princeton Junction, N.J.).

Sunday's final day action will include the 1,650 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Backstroke, 100 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Breaststroke, 200 Yard Butterfly, 400 Yard Freestyle Relay and women's 3-meter Diving. Trials begin at 10:00 AM and finals get going at 6:00 PM.
