Blue Swimming & Diving Cruises Past Franklin Pierce In Season Opener

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College swimming & diving kicked off the 2017-18 season with a sweep of Franklin Pierce University, winning all 15 events to take a 239-18 victory on Saturday afternoon at Chandler Pool. 

Wellesley earns their first dual meet win of the season, while Division II Franklin Pierce is now 2-6 in their inaugural season of swimming & diving. 

Sophomore Danielle Peterson (Livingston, N.J.) paced the Blue with first place times in three events. Peterson won the 200 Free in 2:03.22, the 100 Breaststroke at 1:10.51, and the 200 IM with a time of 2:18.01. Peterson also helped guide Wellesley to a first place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. Wellesley finished first in both relays with times of 1:58.56 in the 200 Medley and 1:53.12 in the 200 Free. 

Making her collegiate debut, first year Emily Yeager (Pittsfield, Mass.) took first in the 50 Backstroke with a time of 30.24 and the 100 back in 1:03.43. Junior Jessie Feng (Princeton, N.J.) also recorded a pair of wins, finishing at 1:01.78 in the 100 Fly and in 5:34.17 for the 500 Free.

Three more Wellesley first years recorded wins in their first collegiate meet. Jessica Wu (Palo Alto, Calif.), finished in 33:81 in the 50 Breaststroke. Solveig Stensland (Lino Lakes, Minn.) finished the 100 Free in 56.96 and Emma Helmich (Huntington, Ind.) won the 50 Fly with a time of 28:11. Also in action, sophomore Kayleigh Svensson (Palo Alto, Calif.) led the Blue in the 50 Free, clocking in at 26:18. 

In diving, senior Maura Sticco-Ivins (Framingham, Mass) recorded victories on both the 1 and 3-meter boards, with scores of 286.60 and 265.20.

Wellesley will return to action next Saturday, November 11, at 1:00 PM when they travel to Simmons College. Franklin Pierce will travel to Saint Michael's College in a tri-dual against the hosts and Merrimack College on Friday, November 10 at 1:00 PM.
