Sticco-Ivins Claims Top Senior Scholar-Athlete Honors at Annual Awards Ceremony

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College swimming & diving senior Maura Sticco-Ivins (Framingham, Mass.) was named the 2018 recipient of the Barbara Barnes Hauptfuhrer '49 Senior Scholar-Athlete Award and the 2018 Outstanding Senior Athlete Award at the annual Wellesley College Athletics Scholar-Athlete Celebration on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at Tishman Commons.

The Barbara Barnes Hauptfuhrer '49 Senior Scholar-Athlete Award honors a senior who combines excellence in academic achievement, athletic excellence, service and leaderships. Each year, the senior selected for this award is also Wellesley's nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. Sticco-Ivins was also honored with the Outstanding Senior Athlete Award, presented to a graduating student-athlete in recognition of their athletic accomplishments over the course of their entire Wellesley College athletic career

In four years at Wellesley, Sticco-Ivins claimed three NCAA Division III National Championships, three New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Diver of the Year Awards, seven NEWMAC titles, eight Seven Sisters Championships, seven All-American honors and two National Diver of the Year Awards. A CoSIDA, CSCAA National, and NEWMAC All-Academic honoree, Sticco-Ivins owns every Wellesley College diving record and the distinction of being the only participant in swimming & diving program history to attend NCAAs in all four years of her career. 

Along with Sticco-Ivins, Wellesley recognized all of its All-American, All-Region, and All-Conference performers from throughout the year, including fencing first year Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain), who was named Wellesley's Rookie of the Year. Calventus-Coveney posted 65-9 record in epee to qualify for the NCAA Regional and earn Northeast Fencing First-Team All-Star honors during her first season.

Friends of Wellesley College Athletics (FOWCA) also recognized a pair of individuals for their outstanding contributions to the Athletic community at Wellesley College. Lori Davidson, Bakery Manger at Wellesley's Claflin Bakery, was presented with the Honor Award given to those individuals who have rendered outstanding service and support to athletics and recreation, in particular for her now famous "sport ball" and "W" cookies that appear at many athletic events.

Finally, after 38 years of service to Wellesley, Connie Bauman, PERA Professor of the Practice and Associate Director of Wellness/Sports Medicine, was named this year's recipient of the Linda K. Vaughan Award for Exceptional Service, named in memory of the former PERA Chair/Director from 1973 to 1990. The award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated relentless passion in support of Wellesley's accomplishments in recreational and competitive athletics and who has shown the team spirit, creativity, courage and leadership that exemplify Linda's belief that the way we play the game and the way we live our lives is more important than the final score.
