Wellesley Swimming & Diving Wins 22nd Consecutive Seven Sisters Title
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Wellesley College swimming & diving claimed the program's 22nd consecutive title on Sunday at the 2019 Seven Sisters Swimming and Diving Championship at Smith College's Dalton Pool. The Blue have now won 29 Seven Sisters Championships in all and every title since 1998.
Wellesley finished the meet with 1334.5 points. Vassar earned runner-up honors with 983.5 points, while host Smith took third with 511 points, Mount Holyoke took fourth with 483 and Bryn Mawr was fifth with 295 points. After earning a pair of All-Seven Sisters honors on Saturday, sophomore Hannah May (Cincinnati, Ohio) added two more on Sunday, while helping the Blue to a pair of event victories. Vassar took the top spot in the other four swimming events and Mount Holyoke senior Samantha Nemivant was the top-finisher in 3-meter diving after claiming the 1-meter diving title on Saturday.
First year Peyton Wang (Palo Alto, Calif.) and sophomore Margaret Harrigan (Chatham, N.J.) followed May in a 1-2-3 Wellesley sweep of the 100 Free. May was first in 54.56, followed by Wang (54.96) and Harrigan (56.14). Vassar's Angharad Healey raced to victory in the 1650 Free and Jesse Ecklund was first in the 200 Back before May clinched the Blue's first win in the 100 Free. Hayley Schultz and Brynn Lautenbacher followed with Brewer wins in the 200 breaststroke and the 200 Fly, but Wellesley sealed their 22nd consecutive title with a team victory in the 400 Free Relay. Wang, juniors Danielle Peterson (Livingston, N.J.) and Kayleigh Svensson (Palo Alto, Calif.), and May combined for a time of 3:39.64 to close out the meet.
Despite Vassar's success at the top of the podium, roster depth again bolstered the Blue on day two. Along with the 1-2-3 sweep of the 100 Free, first years Paulina Gonzalez (Caracas, Venezuela) and Emery Dutton (Wayland, Mass.) earned two of the top-five spots in the 1650 Free, Svensson was third in the 200 Back, Peterson, Dutton and first year Allie Chiou (Chandler, Ariz.) had three of the top-five spots in the 200 Breaststroke, and senior Jessie Feng (Princeton, N.J.) finished third in the 200 Fly. Finally, Wellesley also had two of the top-five relays in the 400 Free Relay.
The Blue will travel to Division II Merrimack College next Saturday, January 26, for a dual meet at 2:30 PM. Diving for the dual will take place on Friday, January 25, at 7:30 PM at Wellesley's Chandler Pool.
