Blue Swim & Dive Opens NEWMACs With 4th Place Showing in 800 Free Relay

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Wellesley College swimming & diving is in fourth place following the opening night of the 2019 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEMWAC) Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute at the WPI Sports & Recreation Center. 

Junior Danielle Peterson (Livingston, N.J.), first year Peyton Wang (Palo Alto, Calif.), senior Jessie Feng (Princeton, N.J.), and sophomore Hannah May (Cincinnati, Ohio) combined for a time of 7:45.61, as the Blue just missed out on the podium in the 800 Free Relay. The Blue also added valuable points in the B-Final, finishing third behind a time of 7:57.92 from first years Shelby Ripp (St. Louis, Mo.) and Paulina Gonzalez (Caracas, Venezuela), senior Sunny Chiang (Troy, Mich.) and sophomore Margaret Harrigan (Chatham, N.J.).

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy won the event with a meet record time of 7:31.09 and is in the overall lead with 66 points. MIT is second with 62, followed by Wheaton College (56), and the Blue (54). Springfield College and host WPI are tied for fifth (46) as Mount Holyoke College, Clark University and Smith College are knotted in seventh (34) while Babson College rounds out the field in 10th (32).

Action continues throughout the day on Friday, with 200-yard freestyle relay, 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay trials at 10:00 AM and 1-meter dive prelims scheduled for 2:45 PM. Finals are set to begin at 6:00 PM.
