Wegner Claims 100 Fly Title To Lead Blue Swim & Dive On Saturday at NEWMACs
WORCESTER, Mass. -- First year Jessica Wegner (Taipei, Taiwan) earned All-Conference honors with a first place time in the 100 Fly to lead Wellesley College swimming & diving on the third day of the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming & Diving Championships at WPI's Sports & Recreation Center.
MIT leads the team standings with 851 points while Wheaton College is second with 627 points, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy is third with 486 points, Wellesley is fourth with 451 points and Springfield College is fifth with 402 points. Host WPI is in sixth (375), followed by Babson College (188), Clark University (184), Mount Holyoke College (181) and Smith College (166).
The Blue earned two of the top-ten times in the 100 Fly, paced by Wegner's time of 56.88. Wegner's time was the second fastest of the season in the event, trailing only her NCAA B-Cut during December's MIT Invitational. The NEWMAC All-Conference honor is the first of Wegner's collegiate career. Junior Maggie Haley (Shady Side, Md.) finished tenth in the A Final (59.71). Wegner would later go on to take first in the B Final of the 100 Back (59.50).
Wegner's NEWMAC title was one of three medal winning times for the Blue during Saturday's action. Wegner also helped lead the Blue to bronze in the 200 Medley Relay, teaming with junior Kayleigh Svensson (Palo Alto, Calif.), junior Danielle Peterson (Livingston, N.J.), and first year Peyton Wang (Palo Alto, Calif.) to cap the third day of competition with a time of 1:48.38. Earlier in the evening, Svensson finished ninth in the 100 Back, finishing in 59.55.
Sophomore Hannah May (Cincinnati, Ohio) added the third bronze for the Blue with a time of 1:54.80 in the 200 Free. Closing out the times for the Blue on Saturday night, senior Sunny Chiang (Troy, Mich.) took ninth in the 400 IM (4:42.26).
The final day begins with the prelims on Sunday at 10 a.m., followed by the finals session at 6 p.m. The events for Sunday include the 1650 free, the 200 back, the 100 free, the 200 breast, the 200 fly, 3-meter diving and the 400 freestyle relay.
