Wellesley Finishes Fifth At 2019 NEWMAC Swimming & Diving Championship

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Wellesley College swimming & diving took fifth place at the 2019 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Swimming and Diving Championship following the final night of competition on Sunday at WPI's Sports & Recreation Center.

MIT secured its ninth consecutive NEWMAC title with 1,281 points. Wheaton College finished second with 908 points, while the U.S. Coast Guard Academy was third (724), Springfield College was fourth (651) and the Blue finished fifth (608). Host WPI was three points behind in sixth (605) as Babson College (272), Mount Holyoke College (253), Clark University (242) and Smith College (228) were seventh through 10th, respectively.

First year Jessica Wegner (Taipei, Taiwan) capped a standout weekend at the NEWMAC Championships by setting the program record in the 50 Yard Fly during a Sunday morning time trial. Wegner, who also helped the Blue set a program record in the 200 Free Relay on Friday and earned NEWMAC All-Conference honors in 100 Fly on Saturday, finished with a time of 25.99 to break Dorothy Ren's '16 previous mark of 26.20 set in 2015.

The Blue closed out the weekend with four more top-ten times, including a pair in the 200 Back. Junior Kayleigh Svensson (Palo Alto, Calif.) finished seventh (2:09.52) to lead the Blue, while senior Sunny Chiang (Troy, Mich.) followed her teammate in eighth (2:09.64) in her final NEWMAC appearance.

Sophomore Hannah May (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished a strong weekend with a ninth place time (53.64) in the 100 Free. Svensson and May went on to help the Blue to a fourth place time in the 400 Free Relay in the final event of Championship weekend. Junior Danielle Peterson (Livingston, N.J.), first year Peyton Wang (Palo Alto, Calif.), Svensson, and May helped the Blue clinch fifth in the team standings with a fourth place time of 3:33.67.

In 3-meter diving, senior Ingrid Henderson (Berkeley, Calif.) and first year Emma Roberts (Boxford, Mass.) finished 13th and 14th, respectively. Henderson scored 320.60 during Sunday's prelim, while Roberts scored 304.35.

The 2019 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships will be conducted March 20-23 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
