Wegner Wins Three Events in Close 141-138 Loss to Coast Guard

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Blue swimming & diving team dropped a close 141-138 matchup with Coast Guard Academy on senior day Friday evening.

Wellesley took care of business in event one which was the 200 yard Medley Relay. The team of Cecilia Cai (Palo Alto, Calif.), Ariana Mitsuoka (Centennial, Co.), Angela Zhu (Bayside, N.Y.), and Jessica Wegner (Taipei, Taiwan) earned first place at 1:51.68. The squad beat out the Coast Guard A relay team who swam a 1:53.12.

Wegner earned her first victory of the night with a 59.93 in the 100 Back event. In second place was teammate Mira Tang (Mercer Island, Wash.) who swam a 1:01.96. Wegner's second win came in the 100 Yard Fly with a time of 58.56. Just behind was first year Angela Zhu (Bayside, N.Y.) who swam a 1:00.49. Wegner cruised to her third win by swimming a 2:13.80 in the 200 yard IM.

First year Cecilia Cai took home the gold in the 200 Fly with a new personal best time of 2:08.92. She finished over 10 seconds quicker than second place Meghan Bolin (Ocala, Fla.) of Coast Guard at 2:18.23. Cai also handled the 200 Back event with a time of 2:10.43. Tang placed second with a solid swim of 2:14.06. She also finished first in the 400 yard IM which was a non-scoring event with a time of 4:39.25.

In the 3 meter diving, junior Lily Duff (Scituate, Mass.) earned three points for the Blue with a finals score of 185.45. Teammate Claire Moreland (San Francisco, Calif.) had a finals score of 163.60. Duff then posted a 190.15 in the 1 meter diving followed by Moreland with a score of 163.25.

Ariana Mitsuoka also earned an individual victory for the Blue in the 100 Free. The sophomore clocked in at 55.28 seconds and earned nine points.

The deciding race came down to the last event of the night which was the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. Coast Guard's A relay time of Ellie Hiestand ( Telford, Pa.), Tamara Wheater (King George, Va.), Tailyn Schaufelberger (Austin, Texas), and Lindsey Blake (Bristow, Va.) took home the win with a time of 3:43.42. Wellesley's team of Mellany Smith (West Orange, N.J.), Marisa Papagelis (Westborough, Mass.) , Zhu, and Mitsuoka finished just .04 seconds behind at 3:43.46 to take second.

The Blue will turn its attention to the NEWMAC Championships from Thursday, Feb. 17 - Sunday, Feb. 20 at MIT.
