Wellesley Swimming & Diving Takes Sixth Place at the 2022 NEWMAC Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Wellesley College swimming & diving team finished in sixth place at the 2022 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming & Diving Championships on Sunday at MIT's Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool.

The MIT women's swimming and diving team claimed its 11th straight league title and totaled 1,410 points over the course of the four-day meet. Following MIT was Wheaton College, who was the runner-up with 920 points. Springfield was third at 646 points, followed by Coast Guard in fourth at 627, WPI in fifth at 524.5, Wellesley in sixth at 482.5, Babson in seventh at 315.5, Mount Holyoke in eighth at 306, Smith in ninth at 257 and Clark in 10th with 190 points.

Senior Jessica Wegner (Taipei, Taiwan) set another school record, this time in the 100 Free in the first leg of the 400 Freestyle Relay at 52.32 seconds. Wegner was joined by Sophomore Ariana Mitsuoka (Centennial, Co.), First year Cecilia Cai (Palo Alto, Calif.), and sophomore McKaela Glanville (Menlo Park, Calif.) to earn a fifth place finish and a combined swim of 3:33.05. 

Sophomore Eugenia Ma (Princeton, N.J.) opened up the final round with a 19:01.35 in the 1650 Free took earn 15th place. 

In the A final of the 200 Back, sophomore Mira Tang (Mercer Island, Wash.) took seventh place with a personal record of 2:08.84. Classmate Mellany Smith (West Orange, N.J.) also set a new PR with a swim of 2:07.12 in a second place effort in the B finals. 

Cai joined in with a PR in the 200 Fly and a seventh place finish in the A final with a time of 2:07.43. First year Angela Zhu (Bayside, N.Y.) also set a new PR in the event with a time of 2:14.40.

Mitsuoka earned a 12th place finish overall and second in the B finals in the 100 Free with a time of 52.85, a new personal best. Classmate Glanville and Smith also set PRs, swimming a 53.66 and 55.00 respectively.

In the 200 Back, first year Eva McNally (Shorewood, Wisc.) had a 16th place finish at 2:30.51. Sophomore Alice Johnson (Seattle, Wash.) swam a 2:32.34, first year Shawfong Hsu (Taipei, Taiwan) a 2:33.21, and junior Elizabeth Park closed out with a 2:33.76.

Wellesley last captured the NEWMAC Conference title during the 1999-2000 season.
